Since 2000, the Balkan Legal Forum has fostered collaboration between legal professionals from South East Europe and abroad, working to strengthen the rule of law and thus promoting political stability and economic and social prosperity. Previous fora have each gathered together over 200 delegates from the legal and business worlds, from countries throughout Europe, Asia and America, and this year we expect participants from more than 30 countries. The Balkan Legal Forum has been rated by previous attendees as "the best legal event in South East Europe".

Prior to the conference, we invite you to participate in a legal fair, where current information will be available on the legal climate in Russia, Turkey and Ukraine: clients' expectations of their outside counsels, the outbound regime of investments, and the structure of the legal profession in the region.

IBA President Fernando Pombo will open the event with remarks and will welcome Miglena Tacheva, Minister of Justice of the Republic of Bulgaria, and Daniela Dokovska, the President of the Bulgarian Bar.

At the first session, a distinguished panel of clients and private equity lawyers will discuss private equity deal activity in the Balkans and beyond; regulatory impediments; private equity developments in Western Europe and the United States, special issues in representing private equity clients and political risk in private equity transactions in SEE.

A session on law firm management will follow, posing the question: "So you think you are running a successful law firm?" Prominent speakers with rich expertise in law firm management will share their views with you.

The third session is dedicated to IPO, addressing such issues as the choices to raise capital for growth, acquisitions and IPO; entry into the public market and what it means for a company; and how companies should prepare for the IPO process.

The final session on competition law features prominent speakers from the European Commission and Bulgarian Competition Protection Commission, as well as top-notch private practitioners, who will discuss merger control and cartels.

In addition to the valuable conference content is a rich social programme for all participants to offer excellent networking opportunities.

Organized by the Association for International Arbitration

                                                   October 17th.2008

The Association for international arbitration is looking forward to creating a pool for discussion and encouragement of training of mediators and the development and adherence to voluntary codes of conduct, as provided inthe direction itself.

This conference is intended to discuss the key provisions of the directive and contribute with greater information about this new directive. “ The five key provisions in the directive include; (1) an obligation for Member States to encourage the training of mediators and the development and

adherence to voluntary codes of conduct; (2) gives every judge in the Community discretion to invite the parties’ - at any stage of the proceeding - to participate in mediation; (3) obligates Member States to provide a mechanism to enforce written agreements resulting from mediation; (4) provides that information given or submissions made by a party during mediation are confidential and cannot be used against that party in subsequent judicial proceedings; and (5) contains a limitation and prescription periods provision, which ensures that a party will not be

prevented from access to court as a result of the time spent in mediation.”

The Conference discussion will be summarized on a book published by

AIA with the collected material presented by the speakers.
